First Touchdown! Texas-Longhorns...

Dolores and I went to our first Longhorns game yesterday. It was the FIRST LIVE COLLEGE OR PRO GAME for BOTH of us...EVER in our LIVES!!! It was 92 degrees, the sun was intense...it was sweltering hot/humid (dew points in the lower 70's...like a sauna). This was our first live-touchdown!..a 91 yard kickoff return! Whooohooo!! Hook 'em Horns!... (P.S. Go Badgers!!)

Bee-Fest in our New Kitchen...

We had just gotten our kitchen unpacked and everything set in its place when a swarm of bees settled on the side of our house. Over 50 bees (we counted) got into our kitchen through a crack in the window-frame. We hated to kill them but we had absolutely no choice. We were told later that most likely they had smelled something sweet.

So here is the deal...my favorite time of the day is 11:11. For some reason, when I look at the clock it is the time that is on the clock the most often. I know, weird right... but it is the HONEST TO GOD TRUTH. So I think that 11:11 is my most lucky time and any number with lots of ones (especially 1111) is a lucky number for me. Well, it just so happens that when we came back from New York I had left my truck at the airport and as I was driving home I took a really bad wrong turn (we just moved to Austin... so I get lost). We went a number of miles out of our way and struggled to get turned around in the right direction on the right highway. The funny thing is that, because I took this wrong turn my odometer turned 111,111 just as I pulled into the driveway of our new rental house. Totally ironic. We considered it lucky (I have Dolores hooked now too) and we took these photos. The really odd thing about it is, as I ran inside to get my camera Dolores told me to look at the clock. It was 1:11.

Fairbanks Smoke

Yep...that is smoke and not fog. It is horrible. 2 million acres are burning in Alaska right now. That is larger than the entire state of Delaware. Apparently this photograph was taken on the worst day for air quality in Fairbanks since 2004... when 6 million acres of Alaska burned.

Mid-Day Sun Through Thick Smoke: Fairbanks Alaska

I took this image around noon yesterday through the thick smoke that settled over Fairbanks from nearby forest fires. The air quality in Fairbanks yesterday was "very-unhealthy". Even the airport was closed due to dense smoke that caused visibilities of 1/2 mile. As I'm writing this from deep inside the Natural Science Building, even my office smells like a campfire.

Speaking of FIRE: Alaska is BURNING !

There are so many fires near Fairbanks that we have been breathing smoke for over a month now. The top image is from my backyard. That is a huge wall of smoke in the sky, not rainclouds. the Sky was bright orange! A new fire has broken out 20 miles north of Fairbanks (causing the huge plume of smoke), with additional fires 20 miles to the south, and more fires to the east. I got up this morning and my truck was covered in ash, including burned leaves from these fires. Yes, ash was falling from the sky in Fairbanks this morning. For the most current image of fires near Fairbanks see this website: http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=39668
