The Winter Solstice: Fairbanks Alaska, December 21st...at Noon
This photomosaic was shot at exactly high noon on Dec. 21st looking dead south from Fairbanks across the Tanana Basin towards the Alaska Range. This is the highest in the sky that the sun gets on the winter solstice. The colors in the photograph are true. Until today the days were getting shorter (we were loosing 7 minutes of light per day for awhile). As of today we will be gaining light each day until the summer solstice in late July. Each day will be up to seven minutes longer than the previous day...Hooray!! P.S... Thank you Mr. Raven.

The Road Home: Chena Pump Road and Ice Fog...-40F
Directions: Head up the road in the center right of the image, the bank clock below is in this image on the left side of the road...just as you disappear into the breathtaking soot-and-exhaust-filled ice-fog you will cross Cripple Creek...take the second dirt road to the right into the trees...get out somewhere and freeze your ass off.

Animation: Seven Minutes on Denali
Wednesday, December 5, 2007
Sunset Over Denali: Extremely Windy Night!
This image was taken on a night a few days ago in Fairbanks during a "High Wind Warning". Winds reached 40 mph at 2000 ft here. The temperature was in the single digits with wind chills in the -30 F range. I initially went out at sunset to photograph snow blowing off the top of some peaks in the Alaska Range across the basin. I turned and saw that Denali (Mt. McKinley) was out and that snow was being torn off of the top and sides of the mountain. This image is one in a series of shots that I took from Fairbanks that evening. I am currently putting together an animation to show just how deadly it would have been to be on Denali that day. FYI Denali is 160 miles from where I stood when I took this image in Fairbanks. The peak of Denali stands at 20306 ft.

The First Twenty Below of the Season...
P.S., This was shot at 10:00 Am....The Denali State Bank was already open. The University of Alaska is in the background. To the left on the hill is the Geophysical Institute and the International Arctic Research Center (IARC). To the far right, below the sign...the cool looking building is the University of Alaska Museum of the North.

-4 Degrees Fahrenheit
Yes...I know the image above says ZERO degrees, but when I drove past my bank clock at 9:00 AM on may way to the University this morning the thermometer showed a temperature of -4F. I didn't have my camera with me at the time, so when I finally drove home for LUNCH around noon I took this shot. It had warmed up to ZERO by NOON!!!
